>What the shit is Iron Video Challenge?
The competition:
Iron Video Challenge is an ever-changing web-based video competition system.
Each competition is unique and everyone is welcome to participate.
Anyone can submit to Iron Video Challenge, so long as that person has access to a video camera and can transfer her or his work to a
Quicktime DSL-Med (.mov) file format. It is expected that competetors will shoot their work in mini digital video, but older
video formats are also acceptable. In other words, so long as it can be submitted as an mp4 and was not shot on film.
Each unique competition will have a set of constraints that will influence the type of movies to be made.
These constraints will be revealed at 7:00pm, PST on the second and fourth Friday of each month.
There are two types of constraints: the checklist, and the mystery items.
- The checklist is a set of constraints that will influence the form of the movies. The checklist is just like it sounds, a checklist for participants to review to see what is and is not allowed for production.
The checklist tells competetors how long the movie can be, what type of editing is allowed, what type of sound is allowed, and which things aside from the camera can be used in production.
-
The mystery items are constraints added to influence the content of the movies.
The may include, (but will not be limited to) genre restrictions, prop requirements, dialogue requirements, etc.
Guest judges will then review and rate the different movies based on a constant checklist. Votes will be tallied, and winning videos will get a high-five and be temporarily featured on the front page of the Iron Video Challenge website.
The name:
The name Iron Video Challenge is based on the idea of the Japanese television show Iron Chef. When I think of a better name, I might change it.
Mission:
The goal of Iron Video Challenge is to get people to produce work.
There is a short, 48-hour deadline because I want people to act on their feet. Competetors will have to take risks.
I hope that the constraints and deadlines will both challenge the competetors and foster creativity.
Why put this on the Internet?
Iron Video Challenge was originally conceived as something I would do with my friends. However, by putting it online, people from around the world could possibly participate. Also, this internet space will act as a venue for the submitted work.
